The Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions
The Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions this year promises an unbeatable feast of top-class tennis with Chinese icon Li Na, defending champion Aravane Rezai among those who have qualified to compete in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour season finale. As well as six International Series champions, the tournament is enhanced by two world-class wild cards, former number one and French Open champion Ana Ivanovic and 2007 Bali runner-up Daniela Hantuchova.
This year excitement will be heightened by the fact that, instead of the round-robin format used in 2009, the event will be played as a straight knockout. Each player will have just one chance to progress, with defeat meaning instant elimination. There will be a total of eight matches played over four days when competition takes place at the Bali International Convention Centre, The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, 4-7 November 2010. The six highest ranked players on 25th October who have won an International Series event, and who are not competing in singles at the WTA Tour Championships in Doha, will take part in the $600,000 extravaganza, along with the two wild cards.
Two matches will take place on both Thursday 4th and Friday 5th November to determine the semi-finalists. The semi-finals will take place on Saturday 6th November, with a third/fourth playoff match and the final bringing the event to a climax on Sunday 7th November. The winner will leave with a magnificent trophy and a cheque for $210,000, and the runner-up will receive $120,000.
